Intermittent Fasting for Weight Loss: Advantages and Disadvantages

Joseph Pilates once said, "Physical health is the primary requisite for happiness."

But, in this rat race, everyone is so preoccupied with their schedules that they have developed unhealthy eating habits. Obesity is one of the health issues caused by this.

When you become aware of the extra weight and body fat, it is already too late.

Here, your journey from fat to fit begins, but you are confused about how to proceed.

You are fascinated by intermittent fasting as a way to lose weight quickly.

In the past decade, intermittent fasting has become increasingly popular. However, before you begin intermittent fasting, you should be aware of the benefits and drawbacks.

What is intermittent fasting?

Intermittent fasting is defined as not eating for a set time each day or week. Some popular methods of intermittent fasting are as follows:

Fasting on alternate days- Eat normally one day, then fast or eat a tiny meal (less than 500 calories) on the other day.

Fasting 5:2- Eat normally five days a week, and fast two days a week.

Daily fasting with time constraints- Eat normally, but for eight hours a day. For example, instead of skipping breakfast, have lunch around midday and dinner by 8 p.m.

Alternate-day fasting appears to be as effective for weight loss as low-calorie diets. That seems sensible because eating fewer calories should help you lose weight.

If you're wondering if intermittent fasting is good for you, consider the following advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages

  • Intermittent fasting affects weight loss by creating a calorie deficit by limiting your calorie intake.

  • It also enhances metabolic health and lowers illness risk.

  • When you balance eating and fasting, your body fat composition will vary and stabilize.

  • The weight loss results of intermittent fasting are astounding. The right approach can lead to a slimmer frame and weight loss without looking famished.

  • It controls your insulin and blood sugar levels.

  • It enhances the health of diabetics and those at risk of developing diabetes.

  • It detoxifies and cleanses your body.

Disadvantages

  • Fasting on alternate days is a discipline. Not everyone can follow through or keep it up regularly.

  • It may have an impact on your social life. With most social engagements occurring after hours, it may be challenging to maintain a good 14 or 16-hour fast.

  • Those who have a desire to eat late at night may not be able to reap the full benefits.

  • You may experience headaches at first. Fasting might result in electrolyte imbalance. But, you can correct it by drinking salted water.

  • Your fasting state may feel more like starvation at first. However, if you eat within the 6–8 hour eating period, you are unlikely to starve your body of food.

Intermittent fasting is a weight loss strategy that works for some people but not all.

It is not advised for anyone who has had or is presently suffering from an eating disorder. It may also be unsafe for young people, those with underlying medical issues, and pregnant women.

Furthermore, before beginning an intermittent fast, visit a qualified specialist to ensure that it is safe for you to do so.
